Positional Play - Dropping Defensive Midfielder | Fullback
- Level:
- Intermediate
- Duration:
- 25 min
- Recommended age:
- ["youth","senior"]
Description
The coach/goalkeeper starts by passing to a center-back (A). Then, the ball is played to a fullback (C). The center-back recovers the ball again on the outside. As the fullback returns the ball, the defensive midfielder on the opposite side (E) positions himself between the center-backs. Simultaneously, the center-back on the opposite side (B) shifts outward. A turns toward the center and passes to the dropping defensive midfielder. The defensive midfielder passes to the open center-back (B). Then, the second defensive midfielder (F) switches sides and aims for the space between the lines on the opposite side. The center-back (B) plays back to the fullback (D), who immediately plays to the arriving midfielder (F). F finishes the build-up play by passing into the goal in the space between the lines (1-2 touches; as fast as possible). Then, the coach restarts the exercise. Variations: After every 2 build-ups, start the next pass from the opposite side. Instead of finishing the build-up with a pass to the goal, the midfielder switches the play again from one space between the lines to another. The midfielder who had previously shifted moves into this space and finishes the attack through the other goal. B or A dribble into the space between the lines after a switch of play and either shoot at the mini-goal or pass to the second midfielder in the center. The midfielder turns to the opposite side and shoots at the mini-goal on the opposite side.
